Branded podcast. What it is, what it costs, three examples.
A branded podcast is a show a company owns and makes for the people it wants to reach, about their world rather than its product. For a B2B company that usually means an interview show with customers, prospects and experts from one industry. It costs from $39 a month in software plus your own hours, to $2,100 to $10,000 a month for an agency, and every route asks the host for about an hour per episode.
What makes a podcast branded
The company publishes it, under its own name or a show name of its own. It is not an ad: an episode has to be worth the time of someone who will never buy. What the company gets out of it is who comes on and who listens, and for a B2B company the guest list often matters more than the download count.
Three ways B2B companies run one
| Model | Example | Who talks | Works when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your own experts | The McKinsey Podcast, by McKinsey & Company | The firm's own experts, on the business topics of the day | Your people have views your buyers want to hear |
| Your market talks | Future of Hospitality, by The Journey Collective | 146 hotel leaders so far, across 11 series | You sell to one industry and want to know its people |
| A seat at someone else's table | The roundtables on Future of Hospitality | A company names the hoteliers it wants at the table; the show invites them | You want the conversation without running a show |
What it costs a month
| Route | Price | Who does the work |
|---|---|---|
| Software | From $39 a month (Riverside, Grow plan) | You: the edit, the clips, the posting |
| An agency | $2,100 to $10,000 a month | The agency; you record and approve |
The real bill with software is your time: someone has to edit every episode, cut the clips and post them. How much does a podcast cost? puts every route on one scale.
What it asks of you
The part you can't hand off is the conversation. Count on a short prep, about 30 minutes of recording for an interview, and approving the episode and clips afterwards. Everything else, from the edit to the clips, the pages and the posting, can be done for you.
When it is worth it
A branded podcast pays off when you sell to a defined group of people and an invitation to talk opens a door that a sales email doesn't. It is a weak fit when you need reach among people you can't name, or when nobody in the company wants to host. If it fits, Start a podcast sets it up with you in three weeks, and Lead engine invites the guests you want to sell to.
